Referee preview – Slovenia v USA

Koman_Coulibaly_2

Nicknamed “sleepy eyes” for his tired expression whilst refereeing games, Koman Coulibaly will have to be fully wide awake for a clash which could completely shape qualification from this group. The Malian will oversee a contest between two sides desperate for a win which would surely send the losing country out.

Today’s opponents may well be keeping an eye on the results in Group D as Ghana try qualify for next round by beating Australia tomorrow. But half a year ago Coulibaly took charge of the African nation’s African Cup of Nations final against Egypt. It was his fifth Cup of Nations tournament, a record. The Black Stars lost to a late goal to the north Africans who failed to qualify for the finals after losing a play-off to the USA’s next opponents Algeria.

A former science student, Colibaly moved away from the academic world by becoming a financial inspector. And FIFA would probably rather he stuck to his role of refereeing whilst in South Africa after stories of corruption and financial irregularities have buzzed around the tournament.

But it will hopefully only be about actions on the pitch today and Coulibaly’s considered and smooth officiating style should allow the football to do the talking in a crunch game.

I mean what an awful first half performance it was. The two goals by showed how unfocused the US team was. The second half they played brillant.

Slovenia Man Of The Match: Referee Koman Coulibaly

@ DudeRelax, et al. I agree, the US cannot fully blame the loss of the game on the referee. Bottom line, US needs to stop giving up defendable goals (1. No one stepping to the ball? 2. No communication between defenders and no awareness of the attacker) if they want to advance. It’s lucky that a win in the next game will put them into the knockout round so that they control their own fate.

However, I don’t think you can completely remove the referee from having a fairly prominent affect on the outcome of the game and that’s what made this a poor performance by the crew.

I would love for the referee to say what he saw, but he won’t and we will never know. At this point it’s moot, next game US have got to win.

DudeRelax, we’ll never know what would ve happened. May be US would ve lost regardless. But the thing is the refs in those games made key inexplicable decisions against USA. Third World Cup in a row, its really beginning to look fishy!

It just hit me!!! This is a message from God. I translated it, and the message reads:
DEAREST FIFA:
Thou shalt bring thy game into the 21st century. Thou shalt start using a video review of critical calls (goals disallowed, red cards) if the manager of a side requests it. Thou shalt actually stop the holy heretofore never stopped game clock while a supervisory video review referee consults with the field referee over what the correct ruling should be. Thou shalt also show beer commercials on the tele during this pause in the action.
If thou shalt refuse my request, I shall continue to strike referees deaf, dumb, and blind during critical matches, yours truly,

GOD

Anty – Ah…conspiracy against the US. What do you say about the 1986 handshake deal in 1986 between the Germans and Austrians that prevent the Algerians from progressing to the next round

2002 — Donovan had a goal disallowed against Poland in 2002 — a joke of a call. Plus the Frings incident against Germany.

2006 — Beasley had a goal disallowed against Italy in 2006 – another joke of a call, in a year when Italian football was mired in a match fixing scandal. Hmmmmm….

2006 — Same game, Da Rossi red carded for vicious elbow. So, the (paid off?) ref reds two Americans in the next ten minutes.

2010 — Absolute double-fisted screw job by the ref on the Edu goal. The only thing visible on the tape is a Slovene performing the Heimlich on M. Bradley.

Anti-americanism is alive and well and on display at the Cup. It’s clear the rest of the world does not like the USA’s ascendency in soccer/football.

regardless of how they played in the first half..i dont see how that justifies waving off the third goal and ignoring the missed holding ..and some how we are offsides, obseared. i hope they are removed from officiating these games or make an appology. the commentators even said it was a shame. get instant replay..soccers falling behind in making crucial calls.

Cheers, Gabriel!
The call was absolutely atrocious, and cost us the game, but we can still advance. We win against Algeria (heck, it’s still possible if we draw against Algeria) and we advance.

I’m also cheering for our North American brothers, Mexico, and our old mates England.

Good luck to everyone, and may the officials learn how to actually ref a game.

Put everything aside, the past is the past, win, loose or draw the officiating was horrible!!!
Poor officiating can affect the play and the outcome of any match. For the good of the game FIFA needs to address these issues and not just sweep them under the rug.

One of the worst matches that got completely altered by a referee was the game Netherlands vs Portugal in 2006. It’s in the Guiness Book of Records for the game with the most cards ever. Portugal scored early and then suffered for the rest of the match to keep that score.
The referee made some harsh decisions but the two most memorable moments to me are when Deco is sent of while he is returning a ball to the Dutch players and gets thrown to the ground (why is he sent off…? no idea) and earlier in the match when the Portuguese players interrupt the game because of an injured Dutch player and the ball is not returned to the Portuguese – Deco then sprints to Heitinga and tackles him from behind.
Here’s the video, for your viewing pleasure:

This is addressed to all soccer fans, and FIFA:

Did anyone watch the matche’s Brazil versus N.Korea,
and Spain versus Switzerland.

In the Brazil versus N.Korea match, the referee
allowed the N.Korean player who had blood on his
thigh to continue in the match. He was still bleeding
and did not ask to leave the field of play. The
referee, assistant referee’s and 4th official were
aware of this and did nothing, and allowed this
player to continue in the match.

According to FIFA (Laws of the game) Law 5-Referee

” ensures that any player bleeding from a wound
leaves the field of play”. The officials of this
particular match did not ask the player to leave
the field to patch up his wound, but instead allowed
him to continue playing in the match.

In a similar situation, the match between Spain
versus Switzerland, the player from Spain had
blood on the side of his face, and blood was
gushing out from the side of his face, and the referee
of the match did nothing at all. This player should
have been asked by the referee to leave the field
of play to repair his injury because of bleeding
on the side of his face. The referee, assistant referee’s and 4th official of the match did nothing
at all, and allowed this player to play in the match
without the wound being repaired, and remained on the
field of play.

Once again, FIFA (Laws of the Game) Law 5–Referee

” ensures that any player bleeding from a wound leaves the field of play to repair his wound/injury”!

The match between Serbia versus Germany, the match
official for this match was not very good. Reason
being; Everytime a player committed an infraction
or a foul towards an opposing player, he distributed
a caution(yellow card). Does this referee know what
he is doing? You do not pour out cautions for every
foul!! How did this person become a referee? He kept
giving cautions for every single infraction, foul
towards players. No verbal warnings, automatic yellow
cards.

In the match United Stated versus Slovenia, the referee had a difficult match. He the referee, should
have allowed the goal for the United States. Instead,
he stated, that he saw an infraction towards a U.S
player being committed on a Slovenian player. After
viewing the match, there was no impeding nor any
infraction from any U.S. player being committed on
any Slovenian players.

The goal should have been awarded to the U.S.A.
There was no infraction nor any foul committed on
any slovenian player within the penalty area (18 yard
box).

TO BE REPETETIVE IN THIS CONTENT, about the game
Serbia versus Germany, the referee kept giving out
yellow cards for every foul committed on players.
That was totally unbeleivable. Completely unbeleivable, not even verbal warnings, just yellow cards. That is the worst officiated match thus far!!!

This is an outrage to the american team which has had to overcome countless predjudices and is only just begining to make headway in such a global sport. Fifa should create a commmitee that observes every game and if needed, in dire circumstances of great contention and discontent, is allowed to overule the referee’s desicion. That way, instances such as Thierry Henri’s handball goal which displaced a much deserving Ireland would not be allowed and a legitimate hard earned oppurtuinty, such as Edu’s would be allowed. No one man’s opinion should greatly affect the dynamic’s of a group situation.”

Well said. FIFA will never do that however, because as much as we’d like to believe that our sports are pure, the big money sports like this are fraught with corruption at all levels.

To me it seems that the refereeing at the World Cup is a joke for International Storting Event. With players getting red carded for hand ball when the ball hit their upper arm or for another player running into the back of them and they are getting red carded or having goals disallowed from a foul that did not happen. Couldn’t FISA afford to paid for qualified world class referees for the World Cup. All this is doing is bring down the game of soccer and the World Cup in the eyes of the fans and the world. I for one am every disappointed, so much that for once I have feel that I need to make a comment about how I feel about something which I have never set out to do before and I do not think I will ever watch the World Cup again.
